first day of treatment

ellen started her treatment today. all things considered, she is in very good spirits and has been awake most of the day talking to the battery of doctors that visit her. she has been given all of the various drugs for the day and will be on a 24 hour drip of interleukin.

tiffany, ellen's cousin, inquired about the drugs that she will be on. they are as follows for anyone else who may be interested:

-24 our drip of interleukin
-interferon
-temodar in pill form
-cisplatin
-vinblastin
as well as some maintenance drugs like:
-tylenol
-zofran and phenergan for nausea
-24 hour drip of saline

she met with the physical therapist and attempted to get out of bed for a little bit. her spinning head dictated otherwise. currently she is speaking with the nutritionist about getting something better than fried chicken, fried potatoes and chocolate cake. while this may sound delicious (in a hospital or not) ellen is trying to eat healthy so she was given an alternative menu.

not that anybody had any doubt but they are taking extremely good care of her here.

p.s.
angie visited last night, surprising ellen with a beautiful scrap book of all her girlfriends. she, of course, loved it and had a good laugh at all of the old pictures. thank you very much, angie, and to everyone else who helped in any way with that.

Hey Ellen...I am here is Hilton Head. Sharon and I drove over yesterday. We had computer problems, so I had a hard time getting to the blog. We got it all fixed so we are in business. I was out walking/jogging this morning and thinking about how much I miss my walking buddy. I have so much to tell you and I can't write it all here. I talked to Annie earlier and she said she was going over to play with Nugent. She now has a selection of cats she can annoy and couches she can lie on. Ha Ha! (sorry worm girl) Tomorrow we drive back to Charleston and start our duties with Patrick. Alto, Holly called today and said he was getting a cold...did we mind watching a sick baby?? Sharon and I went to Harold's for lunch...I had a cheeseburger and milkshake, it was so good and should hold be for the rest of the day. I am glad to hear you will be eating healthy!! One last thing, I saw a splash painting in Charleston ($1500.00) The woman said it was done through straws...tell Ryan to experiment with some straws and you will be back in business using a new method. It was really cool...she must have used straws of different sizes, because the splashes were all different shapes and sizes. Okay, that is all for now. Tell your mom "hello". Stay strong...xoxo christy

HI Guys,

I am glad to hear that treatment started today. I talked to Angie after she left yesterday and said how great Ellen was doing through all of this. I am so glad that you got the photo album. We figured it would be good for a laugh. Nothing better than reminding ourselves of great hairstyles, perfectly styled eyebrows, and the best fashion sense. Thinking and praying for you everyday!

Love,
Amber

Hi guys! So glad that the treatment has finally started, and you're on the road to recovery. While I can think of nothing better to eat than fried chicken, mashed potatoes and chocolate cake (can you say finger lickin' good!), I'm sure that was a good move to get a better diet. That's great that you got to see Angie, and you got the scrapbook. I was laughing so hard at some of the pics of us with HUGE t-shirts, and my pleated khakis and lovely perm. :-)

Keep up the great attitude! I've got the greater Chicago-land area praying for you, and I'm thinking of you both constantly! I'll be seeing you soon!
Love,
Amina

Hey Ellen,
Glad to hear you're starting on schedule again. I've been praying for you and feel good about this leg of your treatment. It sounds like they are doing everything right. I'm still waiting for the green light from you so I can book my flight Aug. 8-10 if you're up for it. Let me know. Even if you're still in the hospital, Duke has to be a vacation compared to Grady. Miss you and love you,
Marchak
