emergency room - redux

as you are all aware, ellen had a rough week. nausea, dehydration, lack of sleep - she was not in good shape by the time i returned to durham thursday night. friday morning we called dr. gollob's p.a. and were told to head into the emergency room.

to be clear, we love duke medical center. the nurses are first rate, the doctors are amazing, even the maintenance staff is affable. the emergency room, however, is a nightmare. we were aware of this heading in and it didn't disappoint. there was no shortage of people and the symphony of coughs and hacks was the opposite of pleasant. there was also a gentlemen next to us that had brought in his infant daughter. from what ellen and i could gather there may or may not have been something going on with the babysitter, the emergency staff might have accused him of beating his child and if his wife/girlfriend (we're not sure which she is) came home he would "beat the f--- out of her". the emergency staff called in security. he informed them that they were being "very rude". i'm not sure how he knew they were being rude, though, because he never stopped yelling and cursing long enough to listen to them. there is no experience quite like 10 hours in the emergency room. at least we were entertained.

they ran tests and determined that she has a touch of pneumonia. this explains the nausea, elevated fever AND eliminates the mystery behind the night she woke up in a pool of sweat. so, to review, she did NOT pee the bed, she did NOT pour water on herself and she did NOT take a shower with all of her clothes on. she was admitted and we got a room on the oncology floor around 8:30.

they have been running fluids and antibiotics in addition to her pain and nausea medication. the thought is that she might not be able to start treatment on monday, as scheduled, but it would be another day or two, at the most. we are now in room 9131.

hope everyone is well.

Dang- rough day huh? Sorry to hear you had to spend 10 hours with raving, potentially violent, lunatics. The good news is that Ellen should be feeling better soon right? Keep your heads up!

Hi, Ryan and Ellen. I am glad you went to the emergency room and solved the mystery of her physical symptoms (including the soaking wet bed scenario!) and that Ellen is now getting help to fix the pneumonia. That is great!
I got a chuckle out of your narration and for your labeling your next door neighbor in the ER as a "gentleman". You really know how to tell a story.
Ellen, sorry you had such a tough week. Sending you lots and lots of wishes and love for a better weekend!
Love, Margie

HI Ellen and Ryan!

10 hours in the ER, that is crazy! El hang in there. I know it has been a tough week, but you are a fighter and you will get through all this. Ryan it is good to hear you are back with Ellen.

El, I was up in BG last week for my sister's 21st and it was not the same without you and all the other Pi Phis! We will have to plan a trip there when you are better!

Praying and thinking for you both.

Amy (and Mike too!)

Ellen, Sorry to hear you have been so sick. At least you are in good hands, both at the hospital, and with Ryan back. I was at the store this morning and I saw a plaque that said "All Things Are Possible with God". I immediately thought of you. Hold that thought and know that so many people are praying for you. Much Love, Anna Hillhouse

Dear Ryan and Ellen,

Sorry to hear about the emergency room antics, but glad you are in a room where you will get the care you need. Hope your treatments are not put off too long, but I know they will make sure you are strong enough to endure before they begin. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers everyday. Love, Fredda

Elleln....WHen this is all over, you and Ryan should write a book! But I'm glad you went to the ER....(can't say I've ever been in one where it has been smooth.) I'm sure you will feel better soon with the IVs, and some rest. This may be a blessing as your body becomes stronger from treating the pneumonia.
Rest, rest, rest.....know we are all out here for you.

Hey girl! I talked with your dad today, and he caught me up. Sorry to hear that you had to go through the ER again, but hope that they are getting the right meds in you to fight the pneumonia. Before you know it you will be right back on schedule and starting that round of treatment. And by the way, I knew you did not pee yourself!

We sweat some buckets riding for you today, and your dad told everyone that you wanted an update. Next year we will have to ride together. Although I might need to start spinning, cause I hear you are pretty good. I have a care package from the event that I will send up later this week with a few other things I have for you.

Rest up, and gear up for the next round. I am so glad that Ryan is back with you. We are thinking of you back home always,
Jen

Dear Ellen and Ryan,
At least after such a long wait in the ER, they found out what has been making you feel so awful this past week and they are treating the pneumonia. Hopefully with the antibiotics you'll turn around quickly and be ready for the next treatment soon. You are both in our thoughts, and we check the blog frequently as we continue to pray for good news. Hope the meds are kicking in and you're already starting to feel better by the time you read this.
Love, Kris and Dave

Hi Ellen,
I sure wish they could have sent a nurse over to check on your vitals last week when you were feeling so sick. You are one strong girl to have gone through all of those horrible symptoms...I bet you are feeling sooooo much better after the iv's, huh?
The treatment will begin when your body is ready and I'm sure that will be soon enough. So glad you're on the mend!!!!
Lots of prayers to you, Ryan and Mom.
Love, Marcia

Ellen, So glad to hear your mom is with you. I really miss her at school!! I am saying my prayers that God will sustain you through this difficult time. I read about you in the Beacon Journal. That was the first I knew you were back at Duke. Glad Ryan is there for you to lean on. Keep fighting girl!! Cathy Schrock

Charlotte and I are glad that you are in the hospital receiving care and treatment. "There's no place like home; however, when you are really ill; the hopsital is the best place.

Your frustration level must be at maximu; however, you are doing the important thing and that is hanging in there and having faith. Fighting is not just physical for you is from within. You are a world class fighter. You keep beating back that which would place most on the mat for a knock out.

We think of you constantly and love you both.

Love,

Stan and Charlotte

Emergency rooms do stink! I had to go to the Toledo Hospital on Saturday night which I think might have actually been the 25th. I sat for four hours only to see the doctor for about ummm two minutes. And then proceeded to wait another 20 minutes for another nurse to bring my precrisptions. I guess all of them are the same. But I think my strep throat and the crazy rash(don't be alarmed, the doctor said it was allergic reaction from the grass or something lol) I had on my foot are finally going away so they must have done something good. Its good to know that you didn't pour water on yourself like I did though. haha. Everything up in Toledo/BG area is good minus the bad flooding they had over in Findlay. But I think they're finally getting everything cleared up. Sorority recruitment is next week...I know you probably miss those days ;) Wish me luck! Hope things are getting better! Thinking and praying for you everyday!!!

Love,
your cousin Sarah
