first day in the hospital

hi everyone,
well i am sitting in my hospital room receiving a blood transfusion. it will take 4-5 hours to get the 4 bags. it will probably take more like 5 hours because they will to stop to give me my antibiotic for the pneumonia. i slept most of today. it felt so good. for as much as i hate being in the hospital i feel better being here so they can do something if i'm not feeling well, etc. i guess you could say it's a comfort for me.

three doctors came in this morning at 8am . for a sat. morning 8am was nothing because we were awoken at 5:10 am to a x-ray tech ready to take a chest x-ray. that was a treat! we found out this morning it appears treatment may not start until tuesday or wednesday. obviously the pneumonia needs to be out of my system before they start.

my kidney count yesterday was at 2.2 and today it was at 1.8. so that is good. they assume it will go down again by tomorrow as i am on my 5th bag of fluid. they intend on having a fluid drip the entire time i am here so i think i will be plenty hydrated.

i am comfortable on the 9th floor. i had one of my nurses today from last time. she is such a sweetheart. everyone is really good to me up here on floor 9 so at least that is a bonus.

i will be happy when i am feeling better. i do feel a little better but i am still very nauseous. also i take a pain pill every 4 hours because i pulled 2 muscles from all the dry heaving and vomiting. i forgot what a pulled muscle felt like since i haven't done anything aerobic in a very long time. ha ha.

ryan is taking good care of me and i am so happy he came back. of course he came back just in time to take me to the er and then be admitted. so much for a nice weekend together before treatment. this really has been such a nightmare for all of us. i would do anything for this to be over but it will be one day.

as always please pray for me. i need them all right now!

love to all and have a good Saturday night and rest of the weekend!

Hi Ellen...glad to see you up and writing on the blog this evening. I know things did not turn out the way you expected this weekend, but you will be back on course in no time. Daryl and I shopped for a new lawn mower today. We remembered we bought the last one at Frye Hardware. Ha...now that place is the Goodwill. Shows how long we have had that mower. I have you all in my thoughts constantly, and I know you will be stronger and feeling better soon. xoxo Christy

hey girly,
sorry you are back in the hosp and not able to spend some down time with ryan! i am glad to hear the kidney function is still improving through all of this and that you are getting what you need right now. i'm sure all the fluids will make you feel much better (and the antibiotics too)! so, you said you would maybe start treatment mid-week which is excellent that you wouldn't have to wait until the following monday. glad they are treating you good on the 9th floor.

don't you worry missy, we are all still praying for you. just keep doing your thing down there and get better.

not too much new to report here. preston started kindergarten this week and so far so good. he also go his glasses yesterday and that has been okay too. gwenyth had a good first week of school (no drama, no crying and she loves her teacher).

thanks to you and ryan for keeping us updated even though things have been so crazy down there. stay strong guys!

lots of love,
hilary

Hi Ellen, This is the best news of the day, that you are resting comfortably. I can't imagine how hard the past days have been for you and your mom as you began to feel worse and worse. From your blogs and talking to your mom I can only begin to understand the stress and anxiety you have been under, along with the nausea. You have two good caretakers watching out for you every step of the way, and I will continue to pray for them and signs of health returning to you. Love, Aunt Connie

Ellen and ryan,
Of course we will all be praying for you. I am glad you are being well cared for, that Ryan is with you, and that you are being made more comfortable. You sweet things - you are going through so much - it is unimaginable. Kidney numbers looking good - another 24 hours and you should feel human again!
Take good care of each other -

Wow the kidney count is great! Just thinking about you and thought I would check in! I was so glad to see you typing in.

You had some really good nurses when I was there, and I hope they continue to treat you with the best care. Did they give you one of the corner rooms?
The Football preview was over 3 hours long and of course Tristan's team played last!

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited.
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot erode faith.
It cannot destroy peace.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot suppress memories
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot erode the spirit.
It cannot conquer the soul.

Ell,

Glad to hear you may be feeling a little better and hopefully you will be back on schedule early this week. I know the setbacks are hard but you are in the right care and have so many surrounding you with love that you will get through this soon.

Doug, Kyle, Andrea and I went to Miami this weekend and had a good time. It is wonderful to be back home and to lie on my couch and relax. Miami really is a different world...you don't realize until you spend some time there!

Hope you have a good day today and glad to know Ryan is back and taking good care of you!

Hey Ellen,
I am so glad that you are feeling a little better and are feeling comfortable in your hospital room. I was thinking about you today becuase I was looking for some cute scarfs for you. I didn't find any that I really liked (I am sort of picky) but I plan to keep looking. Take care and keep getting better! Love you!

Hey girl, as always I am praying for you. I will check up on you tomorrow to see how you are doing. Praise God your kidney count is going down! I am glad to hear the nurses and doctors are continually being good to you. Life is going good here. Ministry is increasing now that school is back in for our youth and college in for our young adults. But God is doing some amazing things through these students. THey are taking more of a stand of their faith in God and not giving into the culture around them. More and more are noticing the love of Christ through them and wanting to know what where that love comes from. I graduate this Saturday from my full 3 years of ministry training which is exciting. I also am in a relation with a guy that I have been good friends with for over 5 years who also did the ministry program with me and we are now praying and seeking what the Lord might have for us. So there is my life right now in a nut shell. I love you lots and will check on you tomorrow. Grace and peace to both you and Ryan in Jesus name!

You continue to amaze me and make me smile, El!! Your spirit, sense of humor, vigor and attitude is invigorating!! When I read your posts I can just hear you saying it. I love that. I hope you got my voice message. My dream was crazy. As I go to bed now I pray for you to have peace of mind, no fear, no pain, strength and for that cancer TO GET THE HELL OUT ASAP!!
(I cursed in my prayer...that may not be good;) I just want it OUT and I want you home. I want to hug you and go get a glass of wine together at night on the beach here in San Diego and chat. Soon enough, my friend. Soon enough. Goodnight! Love you.
"Keep on keeping on!"

Well, E, if you ever needed a reason to come home, read on.

As you know, my much beloved Lawn Boy mower finally gave up the ghost while performing active service. It was the infamous "Dueling Mower" that so frequently forced your Dad to get mowing! An oil leak caused me to A) finish your lawn with Ryan's mower (a term I use liberally) and B) go buy a new one.

Frankly, given the status of the lawn wars now underway on Ambler, my new unit is the equivalent of a smart bomb... I suppose unless ol Jimmy and I disarm and go to sheep,
there will be a constant race for the better lawn mower... with a cleaner wider cut, and better bagging. There are bragging rights too for the guy who gets all the gimmicks and best engine (Honda, Briggs/Stratten or Tecumseh) for the LOWEST price. See testosterone is being measured by mower performance AND negotiating skill! Yep, it's that serious.

At any rate, after numerous trips to the merchants, I left Sunday AM alone, credit card in hand, ready to buy. Mrs. R told me what features mattered most to her and that I better not even think about returning unless I had her "dream" machine... disregard all the talk about testosterone!

Well, I snagged a new mower and proudly drove it home. As I pulled into the drive, I noticed a scarf clad peasant like woman working in your yard. Power cords, rake, tarp, hedge trimmers etc. Doing a double take, I realized it was Chris... doing the number on your shrub bed.

I don't even get the car into park, (or my BRAND NEW MOWER out of the box) and she yells "hey, c'mon over and help! So over I go (looking longingly over my should at my new, silent mower).

Under her careful direction, we neatened things up a bit. As you may know, she works like a scythe in the yard, cutting, yanking and pulling. Cutting, yanking and pulling. Me, I just haul and haul and haul back to the organic pile.

After an hour or so of merry work, I look around and can't seem to find her.

Ellen, this is why you need to come home... I find her under that old oak, looking at it with that "cut, yank and pull" gaze for which she is notorious. Ellen, have you ever known Chris to want to leave a tree standing? The only time she speaks lovingly about a tree is when she can park a clean car under it (shade)and let the birds spot it! A chain saw is music to her ears! And there she is, staring at your old oak like a grizzeled peasant woman (headscarf) tree trimmer!

Fortunately, I was able to distract her, telling her that Ryan wanted to cut it down and that she just shouldn't worry about it! Not to mention that it would be an affront to Ryan's manhood, if she did it for him! That clever ploy seemed to work and she wandered off once again. But Ellen, she had the power cords already plugged in and she would have used my little electric on it if I had so much as breathed an OK....

Our kitchen window looks onto that tree. There is no more single minded woman than Chris. So, if you value that tree, and for that matter don't want your yard to look like a prairie (with enough cord wood to add a degree to the earth's temperature, you better hustle on back!

By the way, the new mower does a fine job. And, working in one of the beds, I found a long buried plastic easter egg... a reminder of all the fun that you, Megan and Annie had as kids...

And this thought for Ryan, what better way to celebrate your return than by hiding brand new jewelry! Now that we know he can break into homes, there are many possibilities!

Ellen...I just want to let you know what I found in the shrub bed. While you girls were hiding plastic eggs, Todd was doing the manly thing which was hitting golf balls across the street. (remember then it was a vacant lot which stretched down to the creek?)
You guessed it, I found a golf ball....probably one that Todd let fly right off the toe of his club into the flower bed. Do you remember you and I were just talking about hitting golf balls and using our yards as driving ranges? Like Daryl says "get home quick" because all this testosterone talk is getting the best of me. I need more talk about purses, shoes, ankle boots, and the falls hottest fashion trends and less about power cords, lawn mowers and organic leaf piles. xoxo christy

Hi Ellen, Bummer with the pneumonia etc. No wonder you were feeling so punk. The blood should help you get back on track. Hope all goes well with you the next couple days so that you will be able to get started again. We are finally getting things cleaned up after the festival here in the office. You can be glad you missed that part of the festival. Went well though thanks to you and Jo Ann. Take care kiddo! Cathy
